The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum is a Middle-earth epic set between the end of The Hobbit and the beginning of The Lord of the Rings. Unlike the Hobbit films, which follow Bilbo Baggins on a quest with dwarves to reclaim Erebor, this new movie focuses on one of Tolkien's most tragic and complex characters: Gollum — the creature once known as Sméagol, forever changed by his obsession with the One Ring.
The story takes place after Bilbo's adventure and before Frodo's quest to destroy the Ring. The movie is directed by Andy Serkis, who famously portrayed Gollum using motion-capture in both The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings films, and he reprises the role here.
